Grading System in Primary Education…
Moreover, the grades aren’t bad, for they give us the information about the progress of the child in a particular band width. In my opinion, this is good enough barometer to measure the strengths and the skills of a child between the ages of 3 to 10 years.
Another reason for introducing grades could be that the children at their age recognize the alphabets faster than the value of 95%. The child can be made to understand the codes of the grades in a simpler form rather than the percentage. I further feel that if subjects like Art, Craft, Physical Education, SUPW, music are evaluated by grading, why not the academic subjects too? The bare fact is, now the children should be able to apply the concepts learnt by them rather than quote them by rote memory. In order to apply the concepts, they need to sharpen their certain learning skills. These skills can be taught by the teacher and evaluated more effectively by grading system rather than making method. This so happens because we cannot be accurate in measuring the skill of a person.
I feel and commend the decision of the CBSE and several other state boards of shifting to grading method of evaluation in the primary section. I am sure that the implementation and thorough execution as per the guidelines issued by the boards from time to time will ensure drastic change in the attitude of the children towards their school teacher and their interest towards learning. So, the parents are urged to join hands in this endeavor in the interest of your children who are the future citizens of India.
